Skiing in June can be a crap shoot, but for Month 92 of Turns All Year I rolled hard eights. Anticipating a light summer in terms of skiing, I got out on the first day of the month, only to ski two more days in June’s first week!

Saturday, June 1, 2019 – Silver Peak

I love exploring new areas. Discovering hidden gems of the PNW is one of my favorite things about Turns All Year. So when Nikki proposed a casual trip to Silver Peak, somewhere I’ve never been, I jumped.

Our late-morning tour spanned all of three and a half hours. Due to warm weather the week before, we found much less snow than anticipated. I brought hiking boots, then transitioned too early, and “enjoyed” rock hopping in ski boots. Near the top the ridgeline was completely bare. I transitioned back to boots to stand on the summit while Nikki took a hard earned nap.

The lesson: it doesn’t really have to be skiing to count as a day of skiing.

Tuesday, June 4, 2019 – Inter Glacier

When your ski-wife calls you to make a trip to your favorite place on a Tuesday in June, you say YES! Theresa and I hadn’t been to Inter Glacier in a while, and with all the warming we wanted to hit it before all of the snow was gone. Despite my slow pace, we did the round trip to Steamboat Prow in six hours (not including stops), and enjoyed nicer-than-expected corn on the way down.

We also saw a rescue in process while we were up top. A small helicopter landed at Camp Schurman, then we saw a big huey flying over heading to and from Liberty Ridge. Learning of fellow outdoorspeople in trouble is never good, but it’s especially unnerving when you’re out in the wilderness too. We were happy to get back and see that the rescue was eventually successful.

Sunday, June 9, 2019 – Artist Point Newlywed Shred

Our dear friends Erin and Todd tied the knot on Saturday in the beautiful Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, and made skiing the next day at Artist Point part of their celebration. We followed the same program that I learned about during TAY Month 81, schlepping people up the hill in the back of cars and trucks. We did three laps of fun corn skiing, watched a few talented folks pond skim, and made our way home for a well deserved nap.
