With the early closure of the ski resorts, lots of skiers are lamenting the end of ski season. Yes, even me, the girl who skis uphill in a tutu most of the time. To help you through this tough time, here are 7 hybrid ski words you can work into every day conversation to make yourself feel closer to the mountains.
Skilationship
As in a relationship, but a more meaningful one because: skiing; something/someone you love almost as much as life itself. Ex: “I’m in a total skilationship with this breakfast burrito. I could marry it.” or “I can’t wait to go skiing with my buddy Theresa. We’re in a total skilationship.”
Only the skissentials
As in, I’m only bringing the essentials, but specifically for skiing. Ex: “Hey, Kristina, did you pack your 10 Essentials?” “Naw, but I got the skisssentials, so I’m good!” (Does not actually need to be used in reference to skiing. Since it’s more fun to say than ‘essentials’ you might as well apply it liberally.)
Skiattle
As in, I live in Seattle. Unfortunately, this won’t work for all of you, but you can try. Skutah? Jackski? Florskida? Ex: “I’d love to come visit you, but I’m on lockdown in Skiatttle.” (Okay, maybe this isn’t the best word on the list.)
Skinbounds
As in, I’m going to ski inbounds. Which, you can’t do right now but you can skin in bounds, but, to my great delight, also works as part of this hybrid ski word! Ex: “I’d love to go for a longer tour today, but I think I’ll just skinbounds to reduce my risk and make for a shorter trip.”
Skiboggen
As in a toboggan, but with skis. I’m specifically thinking about sitting on your skis instead of putting them on your feet and riding down the hill that way. Although this term would also be appropriate if another snowpocalypse (skipocalypse???) were to hit Skiattle and you needed to pull a skiboggen trailer on your urban ski tour. Ex: “I’m gunna pull the kids in the skiboggen to the grocery store. Maybe they’ll have toilet paper today.”
Skieerdy Cat
As in scaredy cat, but more extreme. Ex: “He was going to drop into Corbet’s, but he was too much of a skieerdy cat!”. (Editor’s note: this word is my favorite and I’m pretty sure I’m now going to use it everyday, always. I don’t even care if you don’t like it. I’m giddy at my own genius.)
Shotski
As in a ski, but with shots in it. I clearly did not invent this one, but whoever did is even smarter than me for coming up with skieerdy cat. Ex: “After the week I’ve had I could really use a few rounds at the shotski. Too bad all of my friends have to stay 6-feet away from me. Guess I’m drinking a Quarantini alone tonight. Again.”
Got more?
I could only come up with 7 hybrid ski words, mostly because of all of the Quarantinis, but if you’ve got more add them in the comments! (Seriously, I know you’re just “working from home” anyway.) And if you don’t have anything to add, that’s fine, I’ll just ski ya later! (See what I did there?)
p.s. With COVID-19, I’m seriously considering the necessity of any trip that could burden already over-burdened communities. You should too. While it’s all fun and games to go out to the mountains, and it seems like a good way to practice social distancing, consider the potential outcomes. A car accident, needing to stop at a rural grocery store, buying gas…. it all increases your exposure to others, and their exposure to you.

With the virus spreading, we should be avoiding ski-ntimacy
